ECC Solemn Call to Prayer for Wednesday, July 13, 2016
The East Coast Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church is calling on its churches and ministries to particularly set apart this coming Wednesday, July 13, 2016 as a solemn day of fasting and prayer. We need to gather in churches, in homes, in public spaces – on behalf of this divided world, for which Christ Jesus died a violent death, and in the wake of the racial turmoil and violence experienced in the shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Philando Castile in St. Paul, Minnesota – and the shooting of 12 Dallas, Texas police officers, five of which were fatally executed. Many family, friends and coworkers are deeply impacted by each of these tragic deaths.
I urge all pastors and congregations to unite within their metropolitan regions, cities, districts, or states to bring together their congregations, and to invite others in their community, particularly across racial and ethnic lines to come together and to pray. I encourage the invitation be extended to local law enforcement officials and community leaders to join in earnest prayers for healing, for justice, for understanding, and for reconciliation. This is the time to rekindle the ties within local communities, across lines of faith and politics, race and ethnicity for the greater good of God’s Kingdom and the shalom of our communities.
