Rest. Reconnect. Renew.

East Coast Covenant Clergy and Spouses are invited to reconnect, rest, and renew at the 2012 Ministers’ Retreat. Step back from ministry and allow yourself to be ministered to by God’s presence, by your brothers and sisters in the Lord, by time alone, by our speaker, and by the beauty of God’s creation surrounding us at Pilgrim Pines. We look forward to seeing you soon and welcoming you to our retreat. God’s blessings and peace be with you. – The 2012 Ashram Committee

Weekend Speaker:

Stephen Chester
Professor of New Testament, North Park Theological Seminary – Chicago, Illinois

A member of the NPTS faculty since 2006, Stephen previously served at International Christian College, Glasgow (Scotland). Stephen is an ordained minister of the Church of Scotland, with a particular interest in urban ministry. His Ph.D dissertation was published as the book Conversion at Corinth: Perspectives on Conversion in Paul’s Theology and the Corinthian Church (T&T Clark, 2003). Stephen is convinced that fruitful interpretation of Scripture for today requires attention to the theological traditions of the church. His passion in teaching is to equip students to think critically about the interpretation of Scripture in the conviction that true faith grows through wrestling with the text of God’s word.

“The Truth of the Gospel: Pauline Theology and Contemporary Mission”

How do you present the gospel in your own ministry context? What are primary ways in which you explain the gospel? What are the key things you are trying to communicate and what kinds of language and imagery do you use?

Throughout the history of the church there has always been a connection between the interpretation of Paul’s letters and the answers given to these questions. His letters have shaped the proclamation of the gospel.

I want us to explore and evaluate those changes and their impact on our communication of the gospel. If the ways we explain the gospel today are different from the ways we explained it 50 years ago, how is that connected to changes in the way we understand Paul?
