“When God Lets You Down: Trusting Again After Pain and Loss”

After Jackie and I lost our second daughter to premature birth, I found myself reeling for
answers, assurance and strength. The tough thing was that the only One Who could provide
any of that for me was my God, Who, I no longer trusted …

Looking back I now realize that not only did I not know how to suffer—I didn’t know how
to express my frustration with the Lord and the shallowness of my faith. Not being able to
understand the sense of abandonment that I was ascribing to God, I deduced that I didn’t
really know God, hence, couldn’t know myself either.

Does God really let us down? I don’t think so…but it sure feels like it sometimes, and that’s
what I want us to discuss at the retreat. I want to help pastors to do a better job with loss
and grief…theirs and that of the people in their congregations.
